STEPS Nursery has long provided a place for members of the community to gather, learn and share the benefits of gardening. While we see these wellbeing effects on our volunteers, staff and customers first hand, it’s great to know the facts behind the feels!

Health and wellbeing benefits of being out and about in the garden have been well-researched, with studies consistently showing that people involved in gardening experience a broad range of improvements to their general wellbeing including mood, social and teamwork skills, self-confidence and quality of life.

A recent study on allotment gardeners actually found that people experienced an increase in self-esteem and decreased levels of anger, depression, confusion and anxiety after a session in the garden.

Young people can also benefit from a good potter around the garden with evidence to show improvements both inside and outside of the classroom. Studies have proven that students who get their hands dirty in the garden show improvements in interpersonal skills, self-confidence, responsibility and teamwork skills. Parents will also be happy to know that children involved in maintaining edible gardens are more likely to form positive ideas and attitudes around health and nutrition.

Time poor? There’s some good news for you too. Apparently the amount of time a person spends in the garden has no significant effect to the amount of change in wellbeing. So whether you’re a weekend warrior or a bit more serious about your gardening endeavours you’re sure to feel the benefits!

So what are you waiting for! Whether you’re a novice or experienced gardener there are many opportunities for you to get involved in your own garden or by spending time at a garden centre like STEPS Nursery.
