Ready for Work Short Course

Are you looking for work? AMEP students may be eligible to take part in STEPS’ Ready for Work short course.

*For students who have attended the AMEP in the last 12 months.

The Ready for Work short course will help you learn:

  • How to write a resume and job application
  • How to find work
  • How to prepare for a job interview
  • The language used in Australian workplaces
  • Workplace health and safety rules

More importantly, this course includes two to three weeks of work experience in a local workplace!

The Ready for Work Program is for AMEP students who:

  • Can complete 40 hours of work experience
  • Are ready to work or study further
  • Can commit to a full time course
  • Have attended the AMEP in the last 12 months

Flexible Class Times

STEPS AMEP offer flexible class times – Find out more

STEPS provide flexible class times to fit in with your family, work, or other study commitments.  You have the option of attending classes during the day or night, on the days and times that suit you best. Please check class times with each location.

Casuarina: Monday to Friday 8.45am – 3pm (Tuesday & Wednesday evening classes 6pm -9pm)
Palmerston: 
 Monday to Friday 8.45am – 3pm (Tuesday & Wednesday evening classes 6pm -9pm)
Alice Springs: Monday to Thursday 8.45am – 3pm

How To Enrol In AMEP

Whether you’re looking to build your skills, support a friend or loved one, or just curious about the AMEP and how to sign up, our team is always here to help you get the right information when needed.

  1. Check to see if you are eligible.  You can check your eligibility online or call us on 1800 767 051 (Casuarina & Palmerston) or 08 8950 7600 (Alice Springs)
  2. Register with us and book your English language assessment. We can discuss which classes suit you best and any support you need. Contact us or visit one of our locations.
  3. Start your FREE English classes.

 

What to bring to your meeting
Please bring your passport and travel documents.

 

Translation support
We will arrange a free telephone interpreter to help you during your meeting and English language assessment.  If you prefer to bring someone you know to translate, that’s fine too.

STEPS Ready for Work (Settlement Language Pathways to Employment and Training program) is a sub-program of the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

AMEP Eligibility

To be eligible for the program, an individual must:

  • Be in Australia
  • Not have vocational English or above as outlined in the Vocational English Specification under the Act
  • Comply with registration, commencement and completion time limits if their Visa Commencement Date (VCD) is after 1 October 2020, noting extensions may apply (see 2.2 Time limits and 2.3 Extension to time limits)
  • Meet at least one of the following:
    • Hold a permanent visa
    • Hold an eligible temporary visa as specified in the Temporary Visa Classes Instrument.
    • Have previously held a permanent entry permit or permanent visa and have become an Australian citizen
    • If the individual is aged under 18 years, have at least one parent who has held or holds a permanent entry permit or a permanent visa.

Additional Services

STEPS offer a range of free services to ensure students are given the best opportunity to successfully undertake their studies.

Services include:

Free Childcare
Do you need child care to be able to attend the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) classes? Free child care is available for children who are under school age during your class times. When you meet with us we will discuss suitable childcare options with you so that you can get the most out of your study.

 

At Home Tutoring
Home tutors can provide you with extra learning support in your own home.  Home Tutor support is FREE and can give you the one on one help needed to improve your language skills.  We will match you with a suitable tutor based on your learning needs.

 

Settlement Language Pathways to Employment and Training (SLPET)
To assist with the transition to work in Australia, you may be eligible to participate in the Settlement Language Pathways to Employment and Training program. This program provides up to 200 additional hours of English language tuition, focusing on English language skills for employment. SLPET also includes up to 80 hours of work experience placement in a diverse range of fields to help you gain a better understanding of Australian workplace culture and practices.

 

Ready for Work Program (SLPET)
To help with the transition to work in Australia, Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) students may be eligible to participate in STEPS’ Ready for Work program.

 

Ready for Work provides 200 additional hours so you can:

  • Improve your English language skills for employment
  • Get help with work preparation skills, including creating a resume and interviewing tips
  • Complete a number of nationally accredited vocational units
  • Practise the skills you’ve learned through 40 hours of work placement
  • Learn about employer expectations and the Australian workplace culture

Special Preparatory Program
The Special Preparatory Program provides up to 400 additional hours of tailored English classes to eligible humanitarian clients in recognition of their greater learning and support needs arising from difficult pre-migration experiences, such as torture or trauma, and/or limited prior schooling.

 

Classes for Under 18 years old
Migrants and humanitarian entrants aged between 15 and 17 years of age who do not have functional English and whose needs are not met through mainstream schooling may also be eligible to participate in the program.  Participation is generally determined case-by-case, considering individual circumstances and in consultation with local schools.
