STEPS Community Support Client profile: Tyrone

Tyrone joined the STEPS Work Mates Program in September 2025, ready for a fresh start. Although he was disengaged from school, he had not lost sight of the importance of setting goals for his future.

He wanted to attend trade school and secure an apprenticeship to join the painting and decorating industry. This goal gave Tyrone something positive and practical to work towards, giving him the motivation to overcome barriers to meaningful work. He understood that achieving his dream career would require several important steps, and he was prepared to put in the effort.

One of the first obstacles he needed to overcome was his lack of personal transport. Gaining his driver’s licence would allow Tyrone to travel independently, access more employment opportunities, and demonstrate the responsibility expected of him in the workplace.

In a single three-hour session, Tyrone completed the entire PrepL online learning and assessment program. Completing such a significant task in a single session showed just how committed he was to taking control of his future.

From that day, Tyrone committed himself to completing the 100 hours of supervised driving experience needed to earn his provisional licence. Accumulating those hours required planning, patience, and consistent effort, and Tyrone remained focused on the bigger picture – so focused, that he completed all 100 hours in just seven months.

After completing his driving time requirement, Tyrone had to wait a further five months before he could sit his practical driving test. Rather than allowing the wait to distract him from his goal, he remained resilient and knew that his hard work would pay off.

Fast forward to spring 2026, and Tyrone has smashed his goals. With the help of his Work Mates Employment Support Coach, he was able to secure probationary work as a painter and decorator, actively learning from people in the industry.

If Tyrone successfully completes his three-month probation period, he could have the opportunity to progress the experience into an apprenticeship.

Everyone at STEPS Work Mates is incredibly proud of Tyrone and all that he has achieved. His commitment is nothing short of inspiring, and his progress goes to show what can happen when you believe in yourself and your goals and have the right support to consistently guide you.

Congratulations to Tyrone on this fantastic achievement. We look forward to seeing you continue to grow and build the career you’ve been dreaming of.
