Positive Behaviour Support that puts people first
STEPS works with people aged 6 to 65 with a disability to better understand what’s behind certain behaviours and make practical, compassionate support plans.
Our goal is to facilitate everyday self care and independence to help you feel more understood, confident and in control.
What is Positive Behaviour Support?
When you hear the word “behaviour,” it’s easy to think of something negative. But in reality, behaviour is just a form of communication.
When you’re feeling overwhelmed or in pain, struggling to communicate or experiencing sensory challenges, you may show so-called “bad behaviours” that are actually signs you need support. You don’t have to navigate these feelings alone.
Positive Behaviour Support (sometimes shortened to PBS) is a person-centred, evidence-based approach that focuses on understanding what’s behind the behaviour. We work with you to create practical strategies that support your wellbeing and equip your support network with tools to respond with patience and compassion.
At STEPS, we take the time to understand each person’s unique environment, strengths, needs and goals. Then we create a plan that fits into your everyday life and helps you thrive.
Who is Positive Behaviour Support for?
Positive Behaviour Support is for anyone with a disability or autism who may be experiencing behaviours that are distressing, unsafe, or difficult to manage. These experiences can affect life at home, school, work or out in the community.
You might be experiencing:
- Aggression, self-injury or meltdowns
- Withdrawal, avoidance or shutdowns
- Difficulties with emotional regulation or communication
- Property damage, risk-taking behaviours or challenges in social settings
But behind every behaviour is a reason. STEPS Positive Behaviour Support helps you uncover these reasons to create personalised and practical strategies that help you stay calm and in control.
Positive Behaviour Support for family and professionals
Positive Behaviour Support can also be accessed directly by loved ones and professionals who want practical strategies to better support the person in their care, even if the client isn’t actively involved in the process yet.
What support looks like at STEPS
Every person is different, so every support plan should be too.
Our Positive Behaviour Support services are tailored to your individual needs, goals and environment. We take a holistic, person-first approach that values the input of everyone involved, with you at the centre.
Formal assessments and planning
We start by getting to know you: your goals, routines, strengths, challenges, and what matters to you. This can involve behavioural assessments, observations, or conversations with people in your support network.
Behaviour support plans
Together, we create a Behaviour Support Plan that outlines strategies to reduce distress, support emotional regulation, and build skills for everyday life. These plans are practical, NDIS compliant and regularly reviewed.
Skill-building and communication support
Positive Behaviour Support doesn’t just reduce problematic behaviours; we also create positive alternatives. That might include learning new routines, exploring communication tools or building independence through step-by-step goals.
Ongoing support
We offer guidance and ongoing support for the people implementing the plan day-to-day. Our Behaviour Support Practitioners also stay in regular contact to adjust strategies as needed, check in with you and your support team, and make sure the plan continues to meet your needs over time.
