Thomas finds recipe for interview success and secures hospitality role

STEPS Work Mates participant Thomas recently achieved a significant milestone: he successfully secured a role at his local Hungry Jack’s after attending his first ever job interview.

Thomas was feeling extremely nervous and overwhelmed on the morning of his interview, and his anxiety presented through racing, spiralling thoughts about negative outcomes and worst-case scenarios. His trainer recognised how monumental the opportunity was to Thomas and took the time to help him slow down, regulate his breathing and focus on the facts rather than the fears.

Together, the two worked through grounding strategies, discussed what aspects of the situation made Thomas most anxious, and simplified the interview process into smaller, more manageable steps. With a clear plan in place, they arrived early to the Hungry Jack’s store and went to a local café for a mock interview.

During this practice run, Thomas reflected on how much he has grown over the recent months. He spoke openly about his family, his desire to support his younger sister, and the positive impact that his support network has had on his life. Thomas acknowledged that he learned new ways of communicating and responding to challenges, and he expressed gratitude for the guidance he has received.

The time came for the interview, and Thomas exceeded all expectations. He remained calm and composed, communicated clearly, and demonstrated a strong understanding of his personal strengths and how to present himself professionally – all of which led to him being offered the role.

This moment meant so much more than just getting a job. For Thomas, it marks a pivotal step in his journey towards independent living and community participation. The experience has demonstrated to him that even when you feel anxious, you can ground yourself and put your best foot forward.

Thomas said that for the first time in a long time, he felt heard, respected and capable of achieving his goals. His success demonstrates how the STEPS Community Support approach to disability employment support can make a powerful difference by recognising each participant’s strengths and empowering them to take control of their future.
