Tomorrow is World Refugee Day, an international day designated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. It falls each year on 20 June and recognises the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution.
Hear from STEPS CEO Cassie Stanley, who has shared a thoughtful reflection on this important day.
“At its core, World Refugee Day is about human dignity. It challenges us to move beyond seeing refugees as recipients of support, and instead recognise them as contributors to our economies, our communities, and our shared future.
We know that when people are given the opportunity to participate, the impact is significant:
- Education restores purpose and opens possibility
- Employment builds independence and confidence
- Community connection creates a genuine sense of belonging
Importantly, refugees are not only part of the solution, they lead it. They bring skills, insight, and lived experience that strengthen the very communities they become part of.
The Refugee Council of Australia coordinates ‘Refugee Week’ each year and this year’s theme is ‘A Million Stories’.
I believe this photo from our Palmerston site in Darwin this week perfectly captures the spirit of Refugee Week. Our Adult Migrant English Program clients, celebrating through traditional dance and costume, are sharing pieces of their culture, their stories, and their wisdom with the wider community.
Moments like this remind us that our diversity strengthens us collectively, enriching our communities and the connections we build together.”
