STEPS’ Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program Participant Michael has improved his literacy, numeracy and digital skills and also smashed several personal goals.

The Townsville man enrolled in the SEE Program six months ago with a list of aspirations, including obtaining his Learner Licence, improving his performance as a seasonal beach volleyball and AFL referee, and broadening his employment options.

Language, Literacy, Numeracy and Digital Skills (LLND) Trainer Waleve Jolly has been working closely with Michael, who is excited to share his progress.

“A year ago, if someone asked me to upload something to my computer, I would think ‘what are you talking about?’ Now, I own a laptop that I use at home and I’m a lot more confident with computers because of what I’ve been taught,” Michael said.

Now, after six months of participating in STEPS’ SEE Program, Michael has achieved many of his goals. He successfully completed the Queensland Government’s PrepL online learning assessment and has earned his Learner Licence.

Michael then went on to complete the AFL Umpire Education modules to build up his skills as a referee, started volunteering for the North Queensland Cowboys NRL team selling raffle tickets, and updates his resume to reflect his developed skills and new achievements.

Most recently, Michael has secured a job interview for a hospitality job. While this is a field that Michael has not worked in before, his newfound confidence and leadership skills have prepared him to embrace this new opportunity.

“My Trainer, Waleve, and the whole STEPS team care deeply about helping everyone in the SEE Program,” Michael said.

“I would recommend the course to absolutely anyone who wants to improve their skills for work or achieve personal goals like mine. I’ve tried other training programs and there was nowhere near the same level of support as there is at STEPS.”

When asked about Michael’s journey with STEPS’ SEE Program over the last six months, Waleve was excited to praise her participant.

“Michael is a highly motivated, dedicated and good-natured person,” she said.

“He’s always willing to learn new things. In addition to his progress towards his goals, we’ve seen such a positive change in his confidence. Michael is engaging with people of different backgrounds and developing his leadership skills, preparing himself for some incredible professional opportunities down the line.”

The STEPS Townsville team is excited to support Michael on his journey and help him continue to reach his goals.

If you are interested in joining this lifechanging Program, visit the SEE webpage to find out more and apply. New participants can begin their journey immediately, with flexible options to find the learning structure that suits them best.

The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Employment and Workplace Relations.
