What began as a response to changing circumstances has become a highlight of the week for residents of the STEPS Buxton Supported Independent Living (SIL) home.
Following recent changes to NDIS funding, Community Support hours and programs were reduced, meaning housemates Morgan, Paul and Nic began spending more of their time together at home. Rather than seeing this as a setback, STEPS recognised an opportunity to create something new.
Knowing Morgan has previously enjoyed regular, funded Friday outings, the Buxton House support worker suggested turning the new free days into ‘Friday Fun Days.’
After discussing the changes in Morgan’s schedule with Paul and Nic, the support worker encouraged all three men to share ideas and help shape their Fridays together. While transport options were limited, the housemates agreed on activities that focused on getting outdoors, exercising and spending time together.
For their first Friday Fun Day, the group started planning and put on their walking shoes. They used Google Maps to research local cafés and compared the distances before choosing a destination that everyone was happy with.
STEPS encouraged the Buxton men to take the lead, discussing what they would need to bring, how to prepare for the walk and what checks were needed before leaving the house.
Over the last two months, Friday Fun Days have become a regular tradition for the household. The group walks more than five kilometres to their usual café, and each week they explore different routes and parks.
Morgan, Paul and Nic are closer than ever, using the Fridays to bond as a team and become more confident as individuals. Throughout the process, the Buxton men have built their confidence and developed healthy routines, and learned to embrace change and turn challenges into opportunities.
With plans already underway for games of rugby and barbecues at local parks, Friday Fun Days are proof that with the right support, unexpected changes can turn into opportunities for growth.
