Participants in our Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program in Casuarina are prepping for work in the hospitality industry by gaining hands-on experience and job-ready skills.

Each week, the SEE participants cover a range of hospitality skills, from serving coffees and cold drinks to adhering to food safety practices and dietary restrictions.

Katy Sullivan, a STEPS SEE Trainer, says that the classes are designed to get the participants prepared for a variety of hospitality roles.

“From an industry standpoint, these classes are producing amazing, enthusiastic trainees with basic skills and hands-on experience,” Ms Sullivan said.

“I can see the positive impact this training is having on our participants. It’s boosting their confidence and helping them develop not just their practical skills, but their social skills. They’ll have plenty to draw upon when they start or continue their work in the hospitality field.”

While there are required skills that the participants must learn, the classroom activities are primarily led by their interests and passions.

With so much active participation and enthusiasm for the hospitality classes, Ms Sullivan says that the participants will soon be focusing on creating their own food stalls.

“The students are very involved in this process, and it’s amazing to see them gain confidence in their hospitality skills and aim high with their development goals,” Ms Sullivan said.

“We’ve been covering everything they need to know: researching permits, creating business plans, ordering stock, and much more. Next term, we’ll move on to finalising our menus, planning how to take payments, and creating flyers for marketing. I am so excited to see everyone’s food stalls, and I know they’ll all use their lessons to create some amazing products.”

The participants are excited to open their food stalls next term, bringing all of their hospitality skills together in a hands-on, delicious showcase.
