STEPS Work Mates Townsville participant James Brooks has successfully earned a Certificate II in Security.

James first joined the STEPS Work Mates team two years ago; facing significant challenges with communication and social skills, he was uncertain about his goals for the future.

Anthony Doosjen, a Job Readiness Trainer for the Work Mates program in Townsville, says that James has made remarkable progress over the past two years.

“It’s all down to James’ hard work and dedication,” Anthony said.

“He focused on improving his communication abilities and overcoming his social anxiety, and that’s no easy task, but he’s put all his effort into the program. I’ve seen James come out of his shell, form friendships with other participants, and build his own support network. The Work Mates team and I couldn’t be prouder of him.”

The next step in James’ journey was finding inspiration for his long-term goals – and he found it through a discussion with the Acting Manager of Wilson Security in Townsville.

James was motivated by the opportunity and soon after expressed his interest in pursuing a job with Wilson Security.

To achieve this goal, James decided to earn a Certificate II in Security, which he has officially completed!

With his newfound confidence and strong skills, James is now completely committed to working in the security sector and keeping his community safe.

James recently took a pivotal step forward in his career pathway by visiting the Office of Fair Trading to pay for his license, a crucial requirement for his long-term goals.

“James’ story is truly a testament to his determination and resilience,” Anthony said.

“The whole team looks forward to seeing what the future holds for him, and we know he’ll go far. We’ll always be here to cheer him on!”
