STEPS Work Mates participant Kyahn Darlow has taken on work placement for his dream job, just months after joining the Townsville program.
When Kyahn first joined the program, he had a clear goal in mind: becoming a barista.
STEPS Work Mates Job Readiness Trainer Anthony ‘Tony’ Doosjen said that Kyahn was initially shy and withdrawn, making it challenging to meet new people – but in a short amount of time, he warmed to Tony and came to trust him.
“I just knew that Kyahn had so much potential and passion to share with others in his community,” Tony said.
“He already knew what he wanted, we just gave him the tools and resources and support he needed to make it all happen. He’s an incredibly driven young man.”
Tony played a crucial role in Kyahn’s journey, introducing him to Albey from the Cowboy’s Dream, Believe, Achieve Program, which provides on-the-job training to North Queenslanders seeking qualifications and employment.
This connection with Albey led to Kyahn actively pursuing a Certificate III in Hospitality, which directly paved the way for him to secure work placement at a café.
“Once Kyahn enrolled in his course, there was no stopping him,” Tony said.
“He tackled each module with determination and completed them all with ease. It was incredible to see his dedication.”
His hard work paid off, and Kyahn has now begun his work placement at the Brothers Leagues Club in Kirwan.
The STEPS Work Mates team in Townsville has been incredibly supportive, ensuring that Kyahn has the help he needs as he gains valuable barista experience.
Today, Kyahn is happy to be making coffees and serving customers, who say they’re impressed by his professionalism and warm personality.
Amazing job, Kyahn! The entire STEPS team is proud of all of your achievements, especially in such a short amount of time. Keep up the great work!
