Six enthusiastic students from Caloundra State High School recently participated in an Industry Engagement Activity day with STEPS, organised by The Smith Family.

This initiative aims to provide students with firsthand experience with the professional world, bridging the gap between their schooling and future careers.

Karla Bovill, STEPS’ Volunteer Coordinator, expressed her enthusiasm for the program and said STEPS is proud to be part of the Industry Engagement Activity initiative.

“We are thrilled to have had the students from Caloundra State High School join us for the day,” Karla said.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to see the incredible work we do and gain real-world experience in the charity space, particularly with all the different social businesses and services we offer. The students were eager to learn and participate, and it was a pleasure to have them here.”

The experience began with a visit to STEPS’ George Street site, where students were introduced to Charity and Events, Volunteering, Disability Support, Horticulture at STEPS Garden Centre and Hospitality at our on-site Café on George.

The students then moved on to another STEPS site in Caloundra and connected with Community Development Officer Karissa Bultitude to learn about STEPS’ Education and Training programs and Disability Employment services.

Throughout the day, the students engaged in hands-on activities, gaining practical experience in hospitality, participating in activities relating to the aged care and disability sectors, supporting students at STEPS Pathways College, and taking part in mock interviews.

Many of the Caloundra State High School students shared their enthusiasm for the day’s activities, particularly their interactions with the STEPS Pathways College students and their cooking classes.

As an employer-led day, the Industry Engagement Activity allowed students to engage directly with potential employers, learn more about the non-for-profit sector, and participate in learning experiences that will support their transition from school to work and further study.

Karissa Bultitude says that STEPS is deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside The Smith Family and connect with the Sunshine Coast community’s future leaders.

“We’re excited to showcase the amazing things our team does here at STEPS and inspire the next generation,” she said.

“Thank you to The Smith Family for involving STEPS in this initiative and connecting us with incredible young people who care about making a difference.”
