Hannah uses her newfound confidence for a career in care

When Hannah arrived at the STEPS site in Townsville, she was uncertain about what her future held, but ready to give something new a try.

Hannah was referred to STEPS by a former participant and enrolled in the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support course. At the time, she saw it as something to do while she figured out other plans for the long term.

“She was pretty hesitant at the start,” said Josh Guinea, Individual Support Trainer at STEPS Townsville. “It felt like she was just testing the water, but it didn’t take long to see that she had potential.”

Over the next 12 months, Hannah worked steadily through her training and assessments, supported by her training team throughout the course. As she developed her practical support skills, her confidence began to build. She became more self-directed, engaged in the learning, and comfortable backing herself in both her learning and her everyday life.

“She kept showing up and doing the work,” Josh said. “Once her confidence started to grow, everything else followed.”

After completing her qualification, Hannah secured full-time employment at one of Townsville’s largest nursing homes. She provides person-centred support to residents, assisting them with daily tasks while helping them maintain their sense of dignity and independence. The hands-on skills she developed during her training now make a real difference in the lives of vulnerable people every day.

Moving into stable work marked a critical turning point for Hannah, giving her financial security and a true sense of independence. Not long after securing work, she achieved another major milestone; by using her newfound confidence, Hannah earned her driver’s licence. Being able to drive expanded her independence even further.

Today, Hannah is employed full-time, actively engaged in her community, and enjoying stability that once felt out of reach.

“Hannah’s journey is a great example of what’s possible when someone is given consistent support and puts in the effort to reach her goals,” Josh said. “She did the work; we just helped create the space for her to get there.”
