Niko’s career takes off with support from STEPS Work Mates

When Niko joined the STEPS Work Mates program in Hobart in September 2023, he had a clear goal: to find meaningful, long-term employment. Two years later, he’s not only achieved his goal – he’s doubled it.

With the support of the Hobart Work Mates team, Niko has secured two permanent part-time roles at Woolworths and McDonalds, marking a major milestone in his career journey.

But it’s not just about the jobs, it’s also about the growth. Since starting with Work Mates, Niko has shown unwavering dedication to developing his skills and stepping outside of his comfort zone.

With encouragement and one-on-one support from the Hobart team, he’s now being trained in new areas across both workplaces, including front-of-house responsibilities and cash register operations.

His efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. The Work Mates team has praised his performance, and Woolworths even presented him with a personal token of appreciation for his outstanding contribution to the store.

“Having two permanent jobs is something I’ve worked really hard for,” Niko said.

“I feel proud of myself and thankful for the support I’ve had. I’m learning new things every day and I’m excited about what’s next.”

Niko’s journey shows what’s possible when personalised support meets persistence.

The Work Mates program is designed to help people with a disability and autism become more confident, set professional goals, and thrive in the workplace; General Manager of STEPS NDIS Services, Rebecca Bowtell, said Niko is doing just that.

“Niko’s story is exactly why we do what we do,” Rebecca said.

“He’s shown that with the right support and attitude, people can achieve incredible things that change their lives for the better. We’re so proud to be a part of his story.”

The Hobart Work Mates team continues to support Niko as he grows in his roles and contributes to his workplace and community. We couldn’t be prouder of him!
