Julie Campbell only moved to Shelly Beach late last year, but already she has rolled up her sleeves and volunteered for several causes across the community including  a charity op shop, a conservation group and STEPS Nursery.

“I’ve also put my name down to volunteer with the turtle group, but so many people want to do it that there’s a waiting list,” Julie said.

National Volunteer Week is being celebrated across Australia on 21-27 May to acknowledge the difference volunteers make in our communities.

Julie said she enjoys being a part of the STEPS Nursery team because she likes being outside in the fresh air and being around great people.

“Volunteering here is perfect for me because I’ve got a love of plants and I’m doing something useful for the community,” she said.

“I’m now retired, and so it’s time to give something back to society.

“It feels good that the nursery is a part of something bigger,” she said.

STEPS Nursery is a part of STEPS Group Australia, a national for-purpose organisation that strives to create opportunities that make a difference in all the communities across its footprint.

STEPS Nursery manager Lisa Buckley said being a retail nursery that also gives back is really special.

“Our customers and volunteers know that when they buy a plant or donate their time here, they’re helping to support people with a disability in our community,” she said.

To find out more about volunteering at STEPS Nursery call 5436 6023 or visit the nursery at 9 George St, Caloundra.
