Building strong English language skills
English language skills are at the core of the Adult Migrant English Program. We offer free English lessons to eligible migrants, helping to improve our clients’ everyday confidence and quality of life.
88% reported improved speaking skills, and 90% reported improved listening skills
This shows that for the vast majority of STEPS AMEP clients, day-to-day conversations have become much easier to navigate. Clients are more confident when communicating with healthcare professionals, making community connections, advocating for their needs, understanding public announcements, and engaging in English-language media like the news, just to name a few examples.
90% reported improved writing skills, and 91% reported improved reading skills
Common tasks like applying for jobs, helping their child with homework, following workplace training materials and policies, liaising with Government entities such as Medicare and Services Australia, communicating with real estate agents, understanding written information and labels, reading the news, and accessing community services and events are all made easier through stronger reading and writing skills.
