Finding and keeping a rental home has become more challenging than ever, especially for those renting for the first time or re-entering the rental market.

To help address these challenges, STEPS has launched the Five STEPS Housing Program, a practical training experience designed to help people develop real-world rental skills and confidence.

Delivered for free as part of existing STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program classes, the Five STEPS Housing Program supports participants to understand how renting works, from applying for a property and paying rent, to inspections, budgeting, cleaning and home safety.

STEPS CEO Cassie Stanley said the Five STEPS Housing Program was developed in response to growing housing pressures and the need for practical, accessible pathways that support long-term stability.

“Securing and keeping a rental home is part of an ongoing national conversation, and it can be a very difficult process, particularly for people who have never rented before or haven’t learnt how to maximise their rental application,” Ms Stanley said.

“Our Five STEPS Housing Program is designed to meet people where they’re at, using real-life scenarios and step-by-step learning to help our participants understand everything they need to know about renting.”

The Five STEPS Housing Program covers more than 70 tenancy-related topics, including understanding leases, preparing for inspections, communicating with landlords, managing household costs, keeping a rental clean and safe, and protecting your bond.

While learning these tenancy essentials, participants will also take part in activities designed to enhance everyday reading, writing, numeracy, listening and speaking skills to support everyday life, employability, and further training pathways.

STEPS trainers create a welcoming environment and ensure lessons are hands-on, supportive, engaging, and practical.

The Five STEPS Housing Program supports a wide range of participants, including first-time renters, people re-entering the rental market, and those receiving housing or community supports who want to build tenancy skills and confidence. The program can be delivered in partnership with community organisations and support services, with flexible options available such as on-site delivery for housing providers and community groups.

As part of the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program, the Five STEPS Housing Program is available at no out-of-pocket cost to eligible participants.

Whether you’re looking to develop or improve your tenancy skills or you’re a referrer supporting someone to secure accommodation, the Five STEPS Housing Program offers a practical pathway to confident and capable renting.
