Growing with the seasons: How to harvest all year round on the Sunshine Coast

4 minute read

The Sunshine Coast’s subtropical climate allows you to grow fresh produce all year round. So, how do you take advantage of this and garden smarter for bigger and better harvests?

Harvesting fresh ingredients straight from your backyard is very rewarding. Better flavour, less waste, and a stronger connection to the food you eat. It also makes it easier to cook seasonally, using what’s naturally thriving at any given time.

Whether you’re growing herbs on a balcony or building a veggie patch in the backyard, this STEPS Garden Centre article can help you work with the seasons for your Sunshine Coast gardening, leading to healthier plants and less time troubleshooting your garden.

What “growing with the seasons” means

Simply put, growing with the seasons is about working with the local climate, not despite it. Instead of planting the same crops year-round, you can choose varieties that naturally thrive at different times of the year and plant them at the right time to maximise your yields.

The Sunshine Coast’s warm subtropical climate means there’s no true “off season” that you’d get in colder regions. This means you can get into a continuous cycle of planting, growing and harvesting and keep your garden productive as the seasons change.

Timing is key. Planting too early or too late can negatively impact growth and put you at higher risk of pest issues.

But getting the timing right sets your crops up for naturally enhanced growth so you can enjoy fresher, more flavourful produce straight from the garden.

What to plant for year-round harvests

Leafy greens

Regularly planting small amounts of leafy greens can give you a steady supply, so long as you rotate your varieties. Save heat-tolerant greens like kale and silverbeet for summer and grow loose-leaf lettuce and rocket in the cooler months.

Vegetables

You can have home-grown vegetables all year round with smart seasonal rotations. Warm-season crops like tomatoes and beans can be harvested and replaced with cooler-season varieties like broccoli or root vegetables.

Herbs

Herbs are a great year-round staple. Many varieties like parsley, mint and thyme can thrive throughout multiple seasons. Plus, they’re perfect for smaller spaces and windowsill gardens, so you can really elevate your cooking with little effort.

Native plants

Native plants, including bush tucker varieties, are especially well-suited to growing year-round. They tend to require less maintenance once established, and like home-grown herbs, can add unique flavours to your cooking.

Simple ways to maximise your harvest

So, you’ve got your plants and your general seasonal schedule in mind. Now, you just need a few simple techniques to make the most of your harvest.

  • Succession planting is a great place to start. Staggering your planting – we recommend a few weeks at a time – gives you a steady, ongoing harvest instead of an abundance all at once.
  • Mix fast-growing and slow-growing crops so there’s always something ready to pick.
  • Healthy soil is an absolute must. Take the time to improve your soil with compost, organic matter and fertiliser.
  • If possible, adapt your garden space to suit the seasons. For example, you can add temporary shade during the summer and position plants where they’ll thrive the most, depending on their ideal amount of time in the sun.
