In a creative blend of classroom learning and community spirit, STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program participants in Cairns have brought their Certificate III in Business BSB30120 studies to life through a successful Op Shop.

The project began during a Cairns fundraising meeting, where STEPS team members and participants brainstormed ways to support STEPS Pathways College, Australia’s first and only live and learn model of education aimed at changing the future for young people with a disability and autism.

The idea of an Op Shop quickly developed, and the Certificate III in Business participants were eager to take it on.

From the outset, the participants were completely invested. Two participants, Dallas and Chris, took charge of flyer design and spread the word across groups chats to encourage visitors and donations.

Soon, a steady stream of clothes, shoes, books, toys and household items began arriving, contributed by STEPS team members, participants, and volunteers across the various STEPS sites in the greater Cairns region.

The STEPS SEE Program participants led every step of the project: pricing, categorising, creating signage, and setting up the space to welcome shoppers.

They were also challenged to apply strategic thinking and develop ideas to boost sales in the final days, like discounting or bundling items.

After the shop closes this Friday 16 May 2025, any unsold items will be donated to local charities and community groups.

STEPS Education and Training Executive Manager Cassie Stanley praised the initiative.

‘It’s been inspiring watching our business students step into this project with so much enthusiasm,” Cassie said.

“They’ve taken ownership of every part of the process and are gaining valuable hands-on skills in customer service, inventory and teamwork, all while supporting STEPS Pathways College.”

The Op Shop has raised funds for STEPS Pathways College and provided a meaningful, confidence-building experience for everyone involved.

The STEPS SEE Program helps participants develop literacy, numeracy, digital and employability skills in a supportive and practical learning environment.

If you’re looking to build skills for life and work, the STEPS SEE Program could be for you.
