We love celebrating the hard work and achievements of our participants, and Shilo’s journey with our STEPS Work Mates Program in Townsville is a story we need to share.

Shilo joined Work Mates a year ago with big dreams and set her sights on a lifechanging goal: paid employment that made her excited to go to work.

Having a lifelong passion for cars that’s shared by her dad, driving her own car gave Shilo a sense of freedom. Unfortunately, it also comes with costs. She was determined to find a job that would help her grow both personally and professionally and keep her car functioning and full of petrol for as long as possible.

Seeing Community Access Support Workers coming into the STEPS office sparked her interest in disability and aged care support.

With the encouragement of Senior Job Readiness Trainer Tony, she got to work. Together they organised her Blue Card, Yellow Card and police check. Before long, Shilo had landed her first job as a community in-home cleaner, supporting aged care and disability clients.

“Shilo’s story shows just how far hard work and determination can take you,” Tony said. “She’s embraced every challenge, kept an open mind, and is moving forward with real confidence. We’re all so proud of her.”

Shilo’s journey doesn’t stop here. In the new year she plans to enrol in the CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support course at STEPS, building even more skills to reach her long-term career goals.

Shilo is chasing every opportunity to grow into a more independent young adult. We’re excited to see where her next steps will lead!
