STEPS Spotlight: Kuni

When Sokunthear “Kuni” Khuth moved to Australia in 2019, she brought with her a passion for numbers and an open heart for new beginnings.

Now a valued member of the STEPS Finance team, Kuni plays a vital behind-the-scenes role in supporting students, participants and programs across the organisation.

After volunteering with the Finance team in early 2020, Kuni was offered a paid role shortly after and has been part of the STEPS family ever since.

“I may not work directly with participants like our Trainers or Support Workers,” Kuni said, “but I know that I’m part of something meaningful. That makes me feel proud every day.”

A journey across continents

Before joining STEPS, Kuni worked in accounting and finance in her home country of Cambodia.

Moving to Australia was a major adjustment, especially when she arrived to the Sunshine Coast and found the quiet streets and early shop closures a big contrast to the vibrant hustle of Phnom Penh.

But through community programs like Sista4Sista and her volunteering role at STEPS, Kuni quickly found her community.

“I’ve never heard of something like the NDIS before,” Kuni said. “Disability support on this level didn’t exist in Cambodia, at least not when I lived there. When I learned what STEPS does, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”

Supporting STEPS from behind the scenes

Kuni now works as an NDIS Claims Officer, processing invoices and financial claims across several STEPS programs, including STEPS Pathways College, Community Engagement Groups, and Work Mates.

It’s a role that combines her love of numbers with the ability to contribute to a cause she believes in.

“Numbers are where I feel confident,” she said. “Even though my English isn’t my first language, I’ve always felt supported here and I know I’m helping others in my own way.”

A life she’s proud of

Kuni has now lived in Australia for over six years, and in that time she’s built a life that blends professional purpose with personal passion.

When she’s not at work, Kuni enjoys cooking traditional Cambodian meals with friends, listening to pop music (her favourites are P!nk, Celine Dion, VannDa, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, and Rihanna), practicing yoga and pilates, and dreaming up her next adventure (she’s travelled to 31 countries and counting!).

Continued learning, both in and out of work, is one of her greatest joys.

First love, second home

We asked Kuni what she enjoys most about working at STEPS.

“It’s the people. STEPS is my second home. I feel comfortable here, I feel supported, and I feel proud to come to work every day.”
