STEPS Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP) clients and teachers from Palmerston recently had the honour of attending a special reception at Government House NT, hosted by His Honour Professor the Honourable Hugh Heggie AO PSM and Ms Ruth Jones.

The event marked the completion of the inspiring community textile project, Territory Icons in Thread.

This project was part of a travelling exhibition known as the Travelling Suitcase, which showcases small textile artworks and techniques board from across Australia, organised by the Australian Textile Arts & Surface Design Association Inc. (more commonly known as ATASDA).

Packed into a literal suitcase, the exhibition journeys from place to place as a learning tool that introduces people to a wide range of textile techniques while fostering connection and mental wellbeing.

STEPS AMEP clients in Palmerston contributed an incredible sixteen embroidered pieces to the project. For many, this was a chance to explore creativity in a new way, develop their confidence, and connect with others in the community.

The process was enriching, and the final reveal at Government House NT was a proud moment for everyone involved. Seeing their work displayed as part of an exhibition was a joyful and emotional experience for the clients.

Funded by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs, AMEP supports migrants and humanitarian entrants as they improve their English language skills and settle into Australian life.

Projects like Territory Icons in Thread highlight the amazing opportunities that STEPS AMEP has to offer, building stronger and more inclusive communities.

Congratulations to all the STEPS Palmerston clients and teachers in AMEP who contributed to this beautiful project.

If you know someone who could benefit from the STEPS Adult Migrant English Program, please encourage them to reach out to our friendly team at 1300 131 965 or visit the AMEP webpage for more information.
