In the rural Northern Territory, where access to basic services can be limited and identification barriers are a daily reality, something small is making a big difference: an ID card.

Recently, participants in the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program in Katherine received their official STEPS Participant ID card. For many, it was a symbol of belonging and possibility.

One participant, beaming with pride, travelled into town with a support worker. With his STEPS Participant ID card in hand, he successfully collected his birth certificate, applied for his learner’s permit and passed the test, a huge milestone for a young person who previously had no formal documentation and limited access to services.

The STEPS Participant ID card played a crucial role in helping him meet the identification requirements for his permit application. It’s a simple tool, but in a remote setting like Katherine it’s opening doors that were previously closed, empowering participants to take major steps toward independence.

“It’s truly heartening to see how something so simple can have such a profound impact,” said Danielle, a STEPS Trainer in Katherine.

The STEPS SEE Program continues to support participants in developing their language, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills, accessing essential services, and preparing for work and study.
