A fresh start for Somalisa

When Somalisa joined the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program in Cairns, she had a strong desire to build a meaningful career centred on compassion and connection.

From her first day in class, Somalisa showed a genuine commitment to learning and a readiness to challenge herself. She knew this was an opportunity to shape her future, and she was determined to make the most of it.

Developing skills for a career in care

Somalisa approached every lesson with focus and enthusiasm. She put in consistent effort throughout her studies and, with guidance from her STEPS trainers, peers and Participant Support Officer, developed her technical skills alongside her self-confidence.

During the STEPS SEE Program, she:

What’s more, she became part of a supportive and uplifting community.

“We all help each other, and it feels like being part of one big family,” Somalisa said.

Putting skills into practice

Somalisa’s hard work soon began to open new doors.

After completing her qualification, she secured employment with an aged care provider and stepped confidently into the workforce. Now, she spends her days supporting older Australians with dignity, patience and sincerity.

“I’ve grown so much, and I feel excited and confident about my future working in aged care,” she said.

Pathways to opportunity

Through the STEPS SEE Program, Somalisa became more resilient and confident, having developed a strong sense of belonging.

Her experience continues to shape her professional journey, and her story reflects STEPS’ broader impact: helping participants build their skills and self-belief, giving them a pathway to a more fulfilling life filled with opportunity.

What’s next for Somalisa

Now established in her role, Somalisa is focused on continuing to grow within the aged care sector. She is eager to deepen her knowledge, expand her experience, and keep making a positive difference in the lives of others.

Looking back, she feels proud of how far she has come – and excited about her future full of promise.
