We know that petrol costs are affecting everyone at STEPS and contributing to the existing cost-of-living financial strains. We want to help our STEPS team save as much money as possible when you fill up your car, on top of the halved fuel excise easing prices across the country.
This week, we’re focusing on practical ways to reduce fuel costs using the SmartSpending platform’s discounts and other tools.
Automotive discounts available through SmartSpending
Below are the petrol and car-related deals currently available on the SmartSpending platform.
Please make sure to check participating locations before you purchase or use an eGift card, as some companies only allow the use of their cards at participating stores. Fortunately, this can easily be checked on the petrol companies’ websites and mobile apps, all of which we’ve linked below.

EG eGift card
Save 3% on in-store purchases at participating EG Ampol stations only. Not valid at Ampol-only or Ampol Woolworths MetroGo co-branded outlets.
Tips:
- You can stack savings by collecting Everyday Rewards points (save 4 cents per litre with your Everyday Rewards card once you spend $30 or more at a Woolworths supermarket).
- Check participating stations using the EG Club app (download for iOS or Android) or on the EG website.
AmpolCash Digital eGift card
Save 5% on in-store purchases at participating Ampol and EG Ampol stores only. Only $50 and $100 gift cards are available but can be combined and/or multiplied for higher value.
Tips:
- Use Ampol’s store locator on their website or app and filter by “AmpolCash Digital Accepted” to find a participating store.
Shell eGift card
Save 3% on in-store purchases at participating Shell service stations only.
Tips:
- Use Shell’s Fuel Finder on their website or mobile app to check participating locations.
7-Eleven eGift Card
Save 1.5% on all purchases at any 7-Eleven store in Australia.
Tips:
- Use the My 7-Eleven app (download on iOS or Android) to track deals and lock-in petrol prices for up to seven days.
- Use the mobile app or the 7-Eleven website to find your closest petrol station.
- If Energy Australia is your energy provider, you have an exclusive discount offer at 7-Eleven: save 6 cents per litre off Mobil fuel. See this page on the Energy Australia website for more information.
Supercheap Auto
Save 10% in-store and online with an eGift card, or earn 2% cashback when shopping online. You can find car parts, vehicle accessories, general maintenance services and more.
Autobarn
Save 6% in-store and online with an eGift card or earn 5% cashback when shopping online. Find automotive parts, accessories, cleaning and car care products, and more.
Car rentals
The SmartSpending platform has several car rental services with discounts and eGift card offers available.
If you are ever travelling in another region for work or on holiday, this is a great way to save while you’re out on the road.
Extra tools to help you save
Alongside your SmartSpending discounts, you can also reduce fuel costs by:
- Comparing live prices across several petrol companies using the PetrolSpy website, iOS app or Android app.
- Using the fuel apps linked in the above sections for rewards and member discounts.
- Using ‘Eco Mode’ in your car to maximise fuel efficiency, if your car has this feature.
- Maintaining proper tyre pressure, making your vehicle slightly more fuel efficient.
How to access your SmartSpending account

You can access SmartSpending through the mobile app on iOS and Android, or via the STEPS Employee Benefits Hub (also accessible through our Intranet).

Finding and using your deals
If you need help accessing your SmartSpending account or using the platform, we created a step-by-step video tutorial and PDF guide last week. You can find both on the previous SmartSpending web post.
Next week, we’ll be looking at grocery discounts and ways to make your weekly shopping go further.
