Bundaberg local Raymond is the first STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program participant in the region to graduate with a CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support, and he couldn’t be prouder.
Raymond completed his SEE Program coursework alongside his Individual Support qualification, building language and communication skills that have opened new doors for him in the disability and aged care sector.
“I used to think I wasn’t doing well with my language skills,” Raymond shared.
“But my class and Trainers have all been patient and supportive. I can see that I’ve come a long way.”
Through STEPS, Raymond has gained the confidence to pursue a career that he loves.
“Helping people with a disability during my placement made me feel like I’m heading in the right direction,” he said.
“It’s a great feeling to be a carer.”
Inspired by his wife, who completed her own qualification and now works as a Nurse, Raymond knew he wanted to follow a similar path.
The opportunity to work on his language skills while gaining a nationally recognised qualification made STEPS the perfect fit.
“STEPS is very helpful and the trainers are so friendly,” he said.
“They’ll help you in the classroom and get you ready for work in the industry.”
For those who want to pursue a qualification in this area but are nervous that their language skills will hold them back, Raymond has simple advice: “Just do it.”
“I was nervous about the same thing,” he said. “But now I’m really good at communicating. I believe anyone can learn new things, and this is a great industry to join.”
Now, Raymond is ready to make a difference.
“Because of STEPS, I’ve made new friends, I feel more comfortable speaking, and I found a job that I love.”
The positive change expands beyond STEPS; with Raymond’s renewed confidence and his career in care, he and his wife had the stability they needed to pursue two major goals as a family.
The pair have bought their own home and are now expecting their first child!
The STEPS team couldn’t be more excited for Raymond and his bright future.
