After joining the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program, Paul has been working hard to develop his literacy, numeracy and digital skills – building the confidence and tools he needs for the next chapter of his life.
A Fresh Start for Paul
In Townsville, Paul began his journey with the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program after being referred by an employment agency. Recognising that improved literacy, numeracy and digital skills would help him in his job search, Paul decided it was time to take a new step towards his goals.
What Brought Paul Here
Paul described his early experiences with education as a “bumpy start.” After just twenty days in Grade Eight, he left school, feeling unsupported and out of place.
“I didn’t like school and school didn’t like me,” he said. “I just don’t think I was the right fit for that kind of learning, and at that time, there wasn’t much support for someone who didn’t fit.”
Paul forged an impressive resume, working across several industries as a labourer and even spending more than ten years as a professional fisherman in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Still, he knew that today’s workforce required new skills – and that’s what led him to STEPS.
Learning with Paul
Since joining the SEE Program, Paul has dedicated himself to building core skills that are vital for the modern workforce and meeting his personal goals.
With the support of STEPS, including his Trainer Waleve, Paul has worked hard to:
- Learn how to navigate the MyGov and Medicare apps independently
- Build his computer and typing skills
- Send and receive emails
- Strengthen his literacy and numeracy
Success for Paul
Paul’s hard work and determination are paying off. With each new skill mastered, he’s gaining confidence, independence, and a stronger foundation for his next employment opportunity.
“I’ve learned a lot in such a short amount of time,” Paul said. “I know there’s still progress to make, but I can use a computer, send emails, and access Medicare on my phone – I couldn’t do any of that before without a lot of help.”
The Townsville STEPS team is incredibly proud of his progress and commitment to learning.
The Power of Paul’s Journey
Paul’s story is a reminder that learning doesn’t stop at school. With the right environment, personal support, and a willingness to learn and grow, it’s never too late to build the skills that open doors.
Where to Next for Paul
New equipped with digital and literacy skills that once felt out of reach, Paul is one step closer to achieving his employment goals.
“I’m really happy with STEPS and their support,” he said. “My trainer Waleve understands what I need and she’s always there to help.”
Paul’s journey shows just how powerful the SEE Program can be in transforming lives and empowering individuals to reach their full potential.
