Leo’s journey with the STEPS Work Mates Program in Townsville is a powerful example of what happens when passion, perseverance and the right support come together.

From his first interactions with the STEPS team, it was clear Leo had a strong interest in IT.

Whether it was helping around the STEPS Townsville office during class breaks or assisting with setting up computers, Leo was eager to lend a hand and learn more.

But while his technical skills were growing, Leo’s social challenges and barriers to community connections made it difficult to take the next step.

With the guidance of his Work Mates Trainer, Leo began working on these challenges, slowly developing his confidence and learning how to better navigate social situations.

His Trainer supported him not just in class, but in a one-on-one setting to find ways to connect with the community and explore his interests.

Leo had fond memories of a high school work experience placement with Townsville Water, where he tested water samples. That experience stayed with him and he joined a local Creek Watch volunteer group.

These hands-on experiences, such as checking water quality and identifying local fish species, helped him rediscover his love for environmental work.

As Leo grew more independent, he felt confident to pursue his goal to find casual employment. His Work Mates Trainer stepped in to support him with the job search and connected him with Townsville Aquarium; the Manager was more than happy to give Leo a go, offering all of the training he needed to succeed.

Now, five weeks into his new role, Leo works two days a week and is thriving. He’s even taken on customer service duties, something that once felt out of reach.

The feedback from Townsville Aquarium has been glowing, and Leo’s confidence continues to grow.

STEPS is incredibly proud of our Work Mates program and Leo’s incredible achievements. He’s shown that with the right support anyone can find meaningful work and reach their goals.
