After illness left her out of work and uncertain about her future, Mary found support and encouragement through SEE. Now, she’s not only back in the workforce – she’s helping others find their path, too.
A Fresh Start for Mary
In April 2024, Mary took her first steps into STEPS’ Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program in Cairns. After an extended period out of the workforce due to illness, she was determined to rebuild her confidence and update her skills.
What Brought Mary Here
Mary had faced a difficult period in her life and felt overwhelmed at the thought of restarting her career. Lacking confidence and modern computer skills, she was searching for a supportive environment where she could connect with others in similar situations.
Learning with Mary
With the encouragement of her trainers and fellow participants, Mary embraced the learning process and quickly met key milestones in her units. She committed herself to personal growth by:
- Refreshing her computer and workplace skills
- Building confidence through classroom learning and community involvement
- Enrolling in the Certificate III in Business to expand her career opportunities
Success for Mary
Mary’s dedication and enthusiasm for learning extended beyond the classroom. She became an active part of the STEPS community, volunteering with the STEPS Cairns Coffee Shop and Rosies – Friends on the Street, helping prepare meals for people experiencing homelessness.
When the role of Customer Support Officer at STEPS was advertised, Mary’s newfound skills and confidence gave her the push to apply – and she got the job! Now, she is one of the first friendly faces that STEPS Education and Training participants meet when they arrive at a STEPS site.
The Power of Mary’s Journey
Mary’s journey highlights how the right support, encouragement, and education can help someone rediscover their confidence and purpose. She has not only gained employment but also found a strong sense of belonging in her community.
Where to Next for Mary
Now thriving in her new role, Mary is passionate about giving back and supporting others who may feel lost or uncertain about their future. “I’ve been able to help people in need of support and show them that there’s a place for them in the world, there’s always people who care,” she said.
Mary’s story is a testament to the transformative impact of the SEE Program, helping participants regain confidence, develop essential skills, and create new opportunities for their future.
