Imogen’s connection with STEPS began several years ago when she joined the Cairns team as a volunteer, supporting staff with a range of administrative tasks. From day one, her warm presence and bright smile uplifted those around her, quickly making her a much-loved part of the STEPS Cairns community.

After a couple of years of volunteering, Imogen was encouraged to take the next step in developing her skills by enrolling in the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program and BSB30120 Certificate III in Business course. Although she began the course feeling quite shy, her confidence grew steadily as she immersed herself in her training.

“Watching participants like Imogen grow is one of the most rewarding parts of my work,” said STEPS Cairns Lead Trainer Lauren.

“Imogen brings such warmth and kindness everywhere she goes, and we saw that potential for her to use those strengths to help people beyond her amazing volunteer work.”

As her skills developed, so did her ambition. During her studies, Imogen celebrated two significant personal milestones: she wrote and published a children’s book and launched her own creative venture selling hand-designed cards.

After completing the SEE Program, Imogen returned to STEPS as a volunteer tutor, supporting participants in their training and helping new learners feel welcome with her signature kindness and encouragement.

Imogen’s dedication, growing skillset and commitment to helping others led to an exciting opportunity. She now works two days a week with STEPS as an Administrative Assistant, supporting the Admin team and Trainers at the Cairns site.

“She has worked so hard for every achievement along the way, big and small, and seeing her now thriving in a role that she loves is incredibly inspiring,” Lauren said.

For Imogen, this role represents more than employment. It reflects new possibilities, a sense of purpose, and a chance to put her training into practice.

Her journey continues to inspire fellow participants to pursue their goals, showing how the STEPS combination of opportunity, support and community can open doors.
