Life looks very different for Chad these days.
He’s living independently, managing household tasks, and making positive choices for his mental health.
But this didn’t happen overnight.
When Chad first became a STEPS Community Support client in our Sunshine Coast Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Program, he wasn’t sure what to expect.
Like many NDIS participants, he felt nervous about working with a Behaviour Support Practitioner and uncertain about making big life changes. But over time, with the right support, Chad’s confidence has flourished.
“I’ve learned how to calm myself down when I get stressed, and how to ask for help when I need it,” Chad said.
“Because of STEPS, I’m happy and know how to handle stressful situations without getting overwhelmed.”
Through the STEPS Positive Behaviour Support Program, participants like Chad build healthy habits, learn to manage their emotions, and take steps toward a more independent and balanced life.
Behaviour Support Practitioners like Brett, STEPS’ Behaviour Support Manager, visit participants in their homes, schools, workplaces, or in the community to provide guidance not just to the participant, but also to their family, teachers, peers, or support workers.

“It’s about replacing challenging behaviours with positive behaviours and supporting people to live the life they want,” Brett explained.
“We also work with families and other support networks to make sure everyone involved has the tools to help one another long-term.”
For Chad, that support has made all the difference. He now lives with two housemates and fellow STEPS clients, Ben and Josh, in STEPS Support Independent Living (SIL) accommodation.
He’s also become a well-known face in the Sunshine Coast STEPS community. During a recent visit to STEPS Café on George, countless staff and students and clients stopped to say hello, showing the positive impact that Chad has made on the people around him.
His story is a reminder that with the right support, clients can build their confidence, gain independence, and make lifelong connections within their community.
STEPS offers the Positive Behaviour Support program in the regions of Bundaberg, Cairns, Gympie, Hervey Bay, Hobart, Sunshine Coast and Townsville.
