Feature plants for autumn

Autumn is the perfect time to introduce standout plants that bring structure, texture and seasonal interest to your garden. The soil is warmer and the air is cooler, so your plants will establish quickly with less stress.

These autumn feature plants are well suited to South East Queensland conditions. You can find them both at STEPS Garden Centre.

Clumping Bamboo, lined in a neat row, with slightly varying sizes.

Clumping bamboo

Versatile and low-maintenance without losing any elegance, clumping bamboo is a popular choice for autumn planting. It’s ideal for screening or hedging, or you can use it as a bold feature plant.

Clumping bamboo creates privacy in your garden space without the invasive root systems of running bamboo. Plus, once you trim it to your desired height, it won’t grow any higher. Talk about set and forget!

River birch

If you want beautiful autumn colour and a beautiful addition to your garden, river birch is the perfect fit. Reaching up to 10 metres tall in a home garden, it makes a striking feature tree for larger spaces and will provide plenty of shade in the warmer months.

This is a deciduous tree, meaning its leaves turn rich shades of orange and red in autumn before falling in the winter weather. Once those leaves fall away, the river birch reveals its stunning peeling bark, adding some extra texture and character to your garden even when the tree has shed its foliage (not to worry, it will be back in the springtime).
