STEPS staff and hundreds of community members in Townsville proudly marched down Thuringowa Drive on Friday July 7 in celebration of NAIDOC Week.

With flags and banners raised high, clapping sticks bringing the rhythm to impromptu dancing, and cheers from supporters on the side-line, the atmosphere was electrifying at this year’s Deadly Day Out event held at Riverway, Pioneer Parklands.

Deadly Day Out attendees had the opportunity to share in the celebration and witness traditional dancing, traditional food stalls, storytelling by elders, children’s activities, and community services stalls.  This year’s NAIDOC Week theme of For Our Elders honours the communities’ elders, who play important roles of leading, teaching and sharing history and cultural wisdom in their families and communities.

At the Deadly Day Out event, STEPS staff met other community service providers and elders in the NAIDOC committee and discussed what STEPS provide in the community.
