How STEPS Community Support encourages participants to connect with their community

With NDIS changes taking effect in late 2026, participants will experience adjustments to their disability support services, including reduced one-on-one outings for recreational and social purposes with their support workers.

To help our participants make the most of their NDIS funding and maximise the benefits of community activities, STEPS offers Community Support groups.

Accessing regular social outings

How can participants continue accessing outings with reduced funding? Through STEPS Community Support groups, participants can share support and take part in more activities with others.

This means they can continue enjoying regular recreational outings, stay active, build social connections, and make new friendships. Many participants have benefited from increased opportunities to socialise and be part of their community.

Our participant-led approach

Every week, small groups of STEPS Community Support participants come together to plan their next community adventure.

These outings may involve trying a new activity, bonding over shared interests, or visiting local spots. But across the board, they present an opportunity to connect and have fun while developing independence, and social skills, and supporting their wellbeing.

As part of our person-centric approach to disability support, participants lead the way. They share ideas, choose activities, organise where to meet, and shape each week around their goals and interests, with the full support of our team wherever needed.

Along the way, they practise decision-making, planning ahead, communicating with others, and navigating their community. The positive impact reaches well beyond each day’s activity, building their confidence and everyday skills through real experiences.

Shared experiences help our participants form and maintain new friendships, strengthen their sense of belonging, and encourage them to try things they may never have attempted on their own.

These weekly community adventures are just one way that STEPS is empowering participants to make informed decisions about their supports. As the NDIS evolves, we are committed to keeping participant choice and wellbeing at the heart of our Community Support services.
