Taking control of his future

When Darryl joined the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program in Gordonvale, he was in a frustrating place– keen to work but held up waiting for his blue card.

Rather than sit still, he decided to get to work on the things he could control.

Making the most of every class

With the support of his STEPS Trainer Mirjam, Darryl enhanced his digital skills, updated his MyGov details, refreshed his resume, and explored his employment options.

Mirjam said she worked with Darryl from the start to set clear goals for each session.

“Darryl always came in with a plan for what he wanted to accomplish that day, and my job was to help him get there,” Mirjam said. “It really sped up his progress.”

A foot in the door

When the sugar cane crushing season arrived, Darryl secured a casual role working on the locomotive at MSF Sugar.

A few weeks later, he called the STEPS Gordonvale site with good news: he’d been offered a full-time seasonal position.

What comes next for Darryl

Darryl is hoping to continue working beyond the crushing season and has his eye on new roles as they come up.

Whatever the next opportunity looks like, he’ll approach it the same way he approached everything else, with a plan and the determination to see it through.

A reminder worth holding on to

Darryl knew what he wanted to achieve, showed up ready to make it happen, and used the support available to him.

Through the STEPS SEE Program, he found the right environment to turn his goal into a reality, and he’s walked away with a job and a renewed sense of confidence.
