Hervey Bay man Zak joined the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program with one clear goal: to improve his literacy skills and job prospects. What he didn’t expect was just how much his confidence and independence would grow along the way.
As part of a recent learning activity, Zak decided to write a Q&A-style letter about his experience in the STEPS SEE Program. With help from his support worker, he crafted the story himself; Zak dictated the words while his support worker handwrote them, then Zak sounded out the syllables and typed up the entire piece on his computer.
It took most of the day, but Zak loved every minute. “It was a fun activity and helped me see how far I’ve come,” he said.
Zak is always striving to better himself and his skills, and the STEPS SEE Program provides a supportive space for him to grow without judgement or limitations.
“The trainers are open and understanding of my needs,” Zak wrote in his letter. “They’re patient and the work is at a level I can manage.”
Since starting the STEPS SEE Program, he’s seen a huge improvement in his reading, spelling, handwriting and communication. “I’ve learnt more at STEPS than I ever could at school,” he shared.
Zak now sees a future filled with possibility. His professional goal is to start his own business employing people with disabilities. Personally, he dreams of owning a house, being a father, and even acting in a movie.
When asked what advice he’d give to others thinking about joining the STEPS SEE Program, Zak had this to say: “Please join. You won’t regret it. I encourage you to follow your dreams and not give up.”
