STEPS recently celebrated the graduation of participants from its Caloundra Get Set for Work program, recognising 14 weeks of learning, skill development and personal growth for young participants aged between 15 and 19 years old.

Get Set for Work is designed to support young people who have left school and are seeking an alternative pathway into employment or further training. The graduation marks the completion of program and participants achieving a nationally recognised FSK20119 Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways.

STEPS Caloundra Business Manager Matt McClymont spoke at the graduation and congratulated the learners on successfully completing the program.

“I’d like to congratulate all learners on their dedication and persistence throughout the course and turning up, even on the days when it felt hard,” Matt said.

“Change is a challenge, but you all rose to the occasion. Your future is so bright. Whatever you choose to do next, we hope you are as proud of yourselves as we are of you.”

Throughout the course, participants took part in practical, personalised activities that focused on building their confidence, independence and workplace readiness. This included learning how to plan days out in the community, conduct themselves in an interview, and use problem-solving skills.

“Many of these young people left school because that traditional path wasn’t working for them,” Matt said.

“We’re proud to deliver a program that really tailors the learning to each young person; their strengths, their challenges, their experiences and their goals.”

Off-site learning and teambuilding exercises are a key part of the STEPS Get Set for Work program. During a visit to the Ginger Factory, participants explored different workplace roles and took part in a simulated Work Health and Safety (WHS) meeting, where they identified issues and communicated solutions, familiarising themselves with workplace expectations and responsibilities.

Participants also prepared for employment through resume workshopping, job application writing, and mock interviews with their trainers. The graduates excitedly shared their career aspirations in these mock interviews, with positions ranging from Automotive Mechanic and Store Assistant to Tattoo Artist and Beautician.

Congratulations to all STEPS Get Set for Work graduates. We would like to extend a thank you to everyone who attended the graduation ceremony, including parents and guardians, as well as STEPS team members.
