The Hon Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Skills and Training visited the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program class at Venndale Rehabilitation Centre in Northern Territory’s Katherine, recognising the critical role education plays in creating opportunities and transforming lives.
The visit highlighted the importance of inclusive training programs that empower individuals to become more confident, develop practical skills for work and life, and overcome barriers to employment.
Minister Giles met with STEPS participants and trainers to learn more about the STEPS SEE Program, its impact on participants at Venndale, and how the STEPS team tailors the learning to the participants’ needs. The location is just one of several partner sites where STEPS offers a SEE class, complementing dedicated STEPS-operated sites that are accessible to all eligible participants.
STEPS Trainer Danielle Freckleton shared that the class has been focusing on budgeting and recently gained access to computers, allowing participants to strengthen their digital literacy skills for modern life and employment.
Participants spoke to Minister Giles in front of the class about the sense of belonging and purpose they’ve found through the STEPS SEE Program Minister Giles was keen to hear from the participants and invited them to share their experience. Many participants took the brave step of speaking to Minister Giles in front of the class, reflecting on their learning journey.
“Everyone here has made me feel completely welcome,” one participant said. “I’m part of the family here. When I first came here, I was down and out, but my whole view on life has changed since coming to STEPS.”
Another participant reflected on the opportunities that the STEPS SEE Program provides. “Where I come from in the bush, we’re limited in our options. But when I think about bettering myself for my future, I think that starts in a place like this.”
