The achievements of STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program participants in Darwin were front and centre at this year’s end of year celebration, where The Hon Andrew Giles MP, Minister for Skills and Training joined participants, their loved ones, trainers, members of the community and more to recognise a year of remarkable growth.
Minister Giles presented certificates of achievement to seven graduating participants, congratulating them on their hard work and resilience. In addition, seventy participants from STEPS SEE locations across Darwin—including partner sites such as House 49 and CAAPS, as well as STEPS-operated facilities—were celebrated for reaching significant personal and educational milestones throughout 2025.
For many participants, the event marked the culmination of months of building confidence and strengthening English, literacy, numeracy and digital literacy skills while taking steps towards employment or further study.
STEPS Business Manager for Casuarina, Chris Garth, spoke about the extraordinary growth he has witnessed across the SEE community this year.
“Over 450 participants have commenced their learning journey with STEPS here in Darwin in the past 12 months alone,” he said.
“Seventy-three of those learners have already achieved a nationally-recognised qualification. These incredible achievements represent our participants’ courage and commitment, and I speak on behalf of the whole team when I say we’re privileged to walk alongside these individuals on their unique journeys.”
Chris said that at STEPS, the numbers only tell part of the story.
“What makes the STEPS SEE Program truly lifechanging are the personal milestones; gaining confidence after years of doubting yourself, improving your digital skills to better connect with family far away, finding a sense of belonging and community, and reaching your goals, no matter how big or small they may seem to someone else. Our STEPS team here in Darwin all feel very lucky to be part of that lifechanging experience for our participants.”
As 2025 comes to a close, STEPS celebrates not just our graduates but the courage and achievement of every participant who has walked through the doors of a STEPS SEE site, marking an important first step on the path towards their goals.
