Re-engaging with learning: Steve’s STEPS SEE story

When Steve joined the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program in Caloundra in late October 2024, he was looking for more than just a pathway to employment; Steve was searching for purpose and a fresh start.

He had grown up attending school with undiagnosed dyslexia and other learning difficulties, which made traditional education feel out of reach. On top of these challenges, he also lived with depression and anxiety, often finding it difficult to engage with others.

But despite these challenges, Steve bravely re-engaged with learning.

STEPS Trainer Caitlin said that Steve stood out from his first days in the SEE Program.

“He had a quiet determination,” Caitlin said.

“Steve was such a beloved part of the class, and I think we—Trainers, his classmates, support workers who helped out—were all proud to see him coming out of his shell.”

As Steve’s confidence grew, he developed a clearer vision for his future.

In January 2025, Steve expressed interest in pursuing a career in care. That conversation turned into action and, by mid-February, he was enrolled in a CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support course with STEPS.

“Steve is one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet,” Caitlin said.

“His journey really reminds me that when someone believes in you, and when you start to believe in yourself, there’s no limit to what you can achieve.”

STEPS Caloundra is proud to have been a part of Steve’s story, and the team are all excited to be part of the bright future ahead of him and his graduation at the end of the year.
