STEPS marked NAIDOC Week 2025 with fun, heartfelt celebrations, bringing people together to learn, connect with and honour First Nations cultures.

With this year’s theme “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision, Legacy,” it was a special week filled with reflection, creativity and community spirit.

In Bundaberg, participants from the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program and the Get Set for Work Program got involved in the local NAIDOC Family Fun Day.

Before the big day, participants spent time in the classroom learning about the meaning of NAIDOC Week and its importance in the local area, home to four cultural mobs: Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng, and Taribelang Bunda peoples.

The event, hosted by the Port Curtis Coral Coast Aboriginal Peoples Charitable Trust (PCCC Trust), was packed with cultural performances, activities, games and chances to meet local Elders and First Nations organisations.

For many of our participants, it was their first time attending an event like this, and the smiles said it all. They stepped out of their comfort zones, joined in on the fun, and made some amazing new connections.

Afterwards, participants wrote about what they enjoyed most. Their reflections showed just how powerful the experience was, leading to a deeper appreciation for culture and community.

In Palmerston, our STEPS team linked up with Helping People Achieve and Life Without Barriers for a relaxed afternoon at the Harvest Corner Community Garden.

Staff, participants, clients and community members came together for a BBQ lunch and creative NAIDOC-themed activities like basket weaving, terracotta pot painting and planting mini gardens.

It was a beautiful day and an amazing way to celebrate the strength of our community.

At STEPS, we’re proud to support events like these that bring people together and create opportunities to learn from and celebrate different cultures. Here’s to understanding and unity, in NAIDOC week and every week.
