Have you ever struggled to use your computer or smartphone? You’re not alone.
Nearly everything we do today has some link to technology. Whether you’re checking the weather or applying for a job, the digital world is part of our everyday life.
But for many adults, using computers or smartphones can feel confusing and frustrating, especially if they haven’t had the chance to learn these skills before.
That’s where the STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program can help.
We support people to build their skills and confidence with reading, writing, maths, and digital technology. Through digital literacy training, we help our participants feel more connected to the world, independent, and ready for the future.
What is digital literacy?
Digital literacy means being able to use technology in a smart and safe way.
It’s about more than just knowing how to use your computer or phone. Digital literacy includes skills like typing and using a mouse, reading and sending, filling out forms online, finding information on the internet, and knowing how to stay safe while navigating digital spaces.
For adults who didn’t grow up with technology, learning these skills can open new doors.
It helps people feel more independent and capable of doing everyday things, like booking appointments or staying in touch with loved ones.
Why is digital literacy important?
These days, having basic digital skills is just as important as reading and writing. Many jobs now ask for simple computer use, like sending emails or using an app to manage tasks.
Services like Centrelink, Medicare and banking are also offering more and more services online.
Without digital skills, it can be hard to stay connected or take care of the things that are important to you, as outlined in the Reading Writing Hotline’s 2023 National Study.
Plus, it can make it harder to stay safe online. Digital literacy means you know how to spot a scam, navigate the internet safely, and protect your personal information.
Learning digital literacy gives you more choice and can help you find work, access support, manage your money, and keep in touch with your loved ones.

How the STEPS SEE Program builds digital confidence
At STEPS, we know that learning something new can feel daunting – but it doesn’t have to be.
That’s why our STEPS Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) Program is designed to be supportive, hands-on, and fun.
We help our participants learn digital skills in a way that makes sense for them, step by step, with lots of practice and guidance along the way.
Our trainers work with participants to build their confidence using computers, tablets, and smartphones.
Whether you want to learn how to send an email, search for jobs online, or use a Microsoft Word document, we focus on the skills you need for your life.
Every person learns differently, which is why the STEPS SEE Program makes the lessons suit you and your goals. We want you to have a friendly and relaxed space to learn and grow.
Know someone who might benefit?
Not everyone who needs support with digital skills will be reading this, but you might know someone who could benefit from a friendly and supportive program like SEE.
If you’re a friend, family member, support worker, employer, or community member, you can make a difference by starting the conversation.
Mention the STEPS SEE Program and help someone take the first step towards confidence and empowerment in the digital space.
