Cleaning cars for mental wellbeing
Being involved in fulfilling work is one way people can improve their mental health and overall wellbeing.
With Men’s Health Week being celebrated across the country 11-17th of June, men of all ages are being reminded of the importance of looking after all aspects of their health.
Sunshine Coast local Anthony Schlecht found work he enjoyed through STEPS car cleaning, which has been an integral part of his pathway to mental wellbeing.
“I like doing things with cars, and I like detailing cars, making them look nice and making sure the customer is happy,” he said.
STEPS car cleaning and detailing is a mobile service that visits Sunshine Coast workplaces and offers professional car cleaning to staff.
The non-profit service hires a number of staff who have experienced mental health issues such as depression and anxiety.
Cleaning Program Coordinator Donna Teichmann said it was rewarding to see staff grow in confidence, build their skills to join the workforce and get on track to mental wellbeing.
“Since he joined the car wash team late last year, Anthony has not only grown in confidence, but he is a valued member of his team and a respected member in his community,” she said.
Anthony works between eight to 20 hours per week with the car wash service, which helps him achieve goals both with his mental health and personal life.
“It keeps me involved with stuff that I enjoy doing and keeps my mind busy,” he said.
“It’s given me more money to do things like save up for a holiday, and help keep my car and home maintained.
“I’m saving up for things I’ve been wanting for ages.”
