Care course changing lives on the Coast
A family of nine would keep any parent busy, but one Sunshine Coast man is thankful for the chance to care for many more people after finishing his Certificate III in Individual Support.
The care industry is the fastest growing industry on the Sunshine Coast, with more than 8 in every 50 jobs available in health care and social assistance.
Waheed Jalal is ready to start his career in aged care just days after receiving his graduation certificate from STEPS Education & Training.
“It’s very busy work, but it’s very easy for me. This job is similar to work that I used to do in Afghanistan,” he said.
Waheed and his family moved to Australia four years ago after leaving their home in Kabul, Afghanistan.
“I enjoy life here. I like the people, they’re kind and this is a good, safe country for my children,” he said.
“I understand eight languages but when I first came to Australia it was very hard for me to understand people. Now I’m talking to everyone and enjoy it!”
The busy father completed the course as a part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program and said the extra language support he received meant he was able to jump back into the work he loved.
“Before I came to Australia I worked as an assistant paramedic for about 15 years,” he said.
“I’ve also worked in a hospital so I’m very happy working with patients and helping people.”
STEPS trainer Wendy Nunn said she was not surprised to hear Waheed was offered employment straight away.
“The clients at his placement really appreciated him and said he was very caring and very kind,” she said.
“The staff said he was just wonderful. It’s normal for them to love our students but they thought Waheed was exceptional!”
For Waheed, whose children are aged between 3 months and 19 years, the benefits of the course are greater than simply his new job.
“I now help my wife more to do everything, including change my newborn’s diapers. My wife said I’ve changed! This course really helped me in every way!”
This training is proudly funded and supported by the Queensland Government through its Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
Skilling Queenslanders for Work focuses on developing an individual’s skills, supporting them to begin a learning pathway to a certificate III qualification, and providing direct assistance to those Queenslanders that need extra support to enter and stay in the workforce.
